I'm ruminating on where me and Pen “fit in” into what strata of society and what class? We are not chavs without blowing out trumpets we are too intellegent, We don't subscribe or fit into the chav lifestlyle. Because we can see a future and we think about the future, we don't want to spend the rest of out lives living off the benefits system. We do actually want to work to do something and to do well at it.
But we certanly are'nt the same as Pen's Sis and those people, the Cowbridge crowd. We go to the parties, as family, But listening to them talk its a life we don't want. The sums of money they mention is scary and there are a lot of other problems, problems that most people don't realise. We do enjoy some of the trappings of their life, the Shoes, the Handbags and the clothes. We do enjoy the fine things in life, but not for their sake and not for the “look at me” factor. We can appreciate the quality of well made shoes. We can appreciate the variety of food, a diet of more than chikenburgers and the benefits that a decent education can bring*. We sometimes describe ourselves as Bling Pagans.
But isn't that what being a Pagan is about, If your not a Chav and your not a Upper Middle class and your a little bit different with your bleifes then dosent that make you the ideal Pagan?
The Chavs and the Cowbride see us as Pagans and they see the stuff in the media about it. They make assuptions based on what they have seen. And we as a couple are actualy not happy about this because we have proved that we are not, sterotypical Pagans. There is so much about the Pagan world we don't agree with and these so many Pagans that don't agree with what we are what we represnet.
We once and only once attended one of the biggest Pagan events of the year. The Halloween Bash in London. And found it to be very dissapointing. Not badly organised but some of the guest speakers were very rude and very full of their own sense of importance. It wasn't good vale for money and was very much a closed shop. So we have tried other events, other meets and moots in case the Haloween bash was a one off. Same thing we didn't really fit in, we expected more talk more useful information and less ego massage. Its a sad fact that sometimes the terms Bitchcraft and Playgans are based in fact.
I do wonder if the “real” occultists are avoiding the internet because of the negativity and the trolling. Or even worse the quality of the posts and articles on the internet is the same quality of work that is actually going on in the Pagan community (shudders).
So we work on our own.
Cos we don't fit in.
Because we inhabit a word where we survive on the beniftis system-not through choice but through at the moment circumstances, yet run a 5 series BMW.
We descibe ourselves as Bling Pagans, we like a bit of bling a bit of shiney and we have Pagan Values.
*Its a sad sad fact that Education is by postcode, The system like all systems “is not fair” it what you do about this fact is important, you can complain about it and do nothing. Accept it and carry on. Or even recognise the fact and highlight it, and more importantly recognise the value of education.
