Sunday we were invited to a 18'th, a fancy dress party the theme being Barbie and Ken. Plenty of scope there to get dressed up so the Kids picked their outfits, James Bond, Commando and Princess Barbie, and we decided on Barbie and Ken the Retirement years, Cue me raiding the wardrobe for a Socks and Sandals, check shirt, check shorts belted round the stomach and a hat.
Well there was a lot of pink when we got there, most everone had made the effort to get fancy dressed up (apart from a few folk to confuse being too cool to make a fool of themselves with being boring). Then again when the party girls mother comes over and says "Our side of the family know how to make a effort" it shows something.
In a way Fancy dress is a social leveller it takes away all the "who's got the most expensive dress, who looks best in a suit." And places more of a value on who's got the best and most warped imagination :)
And some of the outfits were amazing, including.
70's disco Ken and Barbie, complete with rollerskates.
Baywatch Ken-who was still running around on just Lifeguard trunks at midnight. Anyone remember Jackass and Party Boy? Well his heir is alive and well and living is South Wales.
Arab Prince Ken and Burqa Barbie-who later became a Vicar.
And Jeff Barbie, Who did two costume changes.
The party was in two halves, in the afternoon a family party, with a free bar, so I had my fist taste of Pimms, The kids had fun as there was a couple of rides laid on, a Bucking Bronco and some fairground dodgems. And later on a Band.
We dropped the kids off at 7 and I threw my Suit on we grabbed a quick sandwich and coffee and went back to the Coyd for the evening party. This was the one where all the College Friends were invited, so we chilled around the back of the hotel for a couple of hours before making it to the patio area and function rooms were the teenagers were partying.
Message to teenagers, Dancing on glass tables is stupid, so is tennis playing Ken attempting to play tennis on a crowded patio.
it didn't spoil the night but it makes me glad i'm not 18 anymore.
